The curse of NEW
We live in this world where we are constantly exposed to new ideas and new things. Every day it feels like there’s some new technology or some new concept that’s being pitched at us. These new things are being marketed aggressively by somebody doing their job of trying to market and sell.
But the reality is that in any business or in anything worthwhile it is usually about the incremental gains every single day.
It’s about putting one step in front of the other every single day and working on improving the things that are fundamental and critical.
Just like health and working out. It is not like taking one pill or does one workout and then the next day you are healthy and everything’s better already.
No, it is all about incremental gains. It’s eating the right foods and doing the right exercises every single day that add up over time.
And it is the exact same thing at our businesses.
What I find is that sometimes you get in this period where you are sitting around and just hoping for some sort of breakthrough. You are hoping for something that is going to come along and fix things.
That’s when you know that you are lost. That is when you know that you need to refocus.
Measuring what’s important
There is this concept of a growth operating system which is about being in a rhythm every single day. This is where you measure what’s important and you are making incremental gains on it rather than looking for big breakthroughs.
If you find that you are spending your time in this mental place of hope hoping for a breakthrough and hoping for things to improve then you need to turn to that growth operating system. You need to focus every day on just working to get those incremental gains.
It is so easy to get distracted and pulled into things that are not fundamental. Fundamental things are questions like,
“Are you attracting more leads?”
“Are you getting more opportunities into your pipeline?”
“Are you closing a greater percentage of deals?”
“Are you increasing the value proposition of your products and services?”
“Are you connecting with clients and developing closer relationships so that you can bring them back for repeat business?”
All of these things are fundamental. All of them can be measured.
Are there breakthroughs in those areas that happened every once in a while? Of course. Should we spend a percentage of our time looking for those breakthroughs? Definitely.
But if it takes a majority of your time and becomes a distraction from incremental gains and improvements then you need to get refocused. Get that growth operating system going at your business and mindset as well.
Make sure that you put value and focus on working for those incremental gains every single day. Don’t get lost or distracted by the NEW.
